| claim | a writer's position on a problem or an issue |
| evidence | proof that is used to provide reasons or explanations to support the claim |
| reason | the explanation of why the author feels the way they do about a topic |
| conclusion | restates the author's claim; briefly sums up the reasons |
| introduction | contains the author's claim |
| counterclaim | a claim used to refute another claim that was made |
| argument | an opinion that is supported by reasons and evidence |
| body paragraph | gives reasons, evidence, facts, and examples to support the author's claim. |
| audience | the group of people the argument is geared toward |
| refute | to disprove a statement or theory |
