Argumentative Terms

Vocabulary

claim a writer's position on a problem or an issue
evidence proof that is used to provide reasons or explanations to support the claim
reason the explanation of why the author feels the way they do about a topic
conclusion restates the author's claim; briefly sums up the reasons
introduction contains the author's claim
counterclaim a claim used to refute another claim that was made
argument an opinion that is supported by reasons and evidence
body paragraph gives reasons, evidence, facts, and examples to support the author's claim.
audience the group of people the argument is geared toward
refute to disprove a statement or theory
