Academic Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Analyze | to break into smaller components for the purpose of study or examination |
| Antonym Context Clues | use other words in the sentence that have the opposite meaning of the unfamiliar word |
| Base Word | a word that can stand alone without a prefix and/or suffix |
| Connotative | refers to the emotions ( positive or negative) |
| Cumulative | overall |
| Define | to make a statement of the exact meaning of a word |
| Definition Context Clues | define an unfamiliar word directly and clearly in the sentence in which the word appears. |
| Determine | to conclude or ascertain after reading |
| Figurative language | language that contains or uses figures of speech ( e.g. simile, metaphor, personification, imagery, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole , idioms) |
| Formal | proper |
| Impact | to have a strong effect on someone or something |
| Inference Context Clues | not directly stated in the text, but give hints to the meaning of an unfamiliar word |
| Informal | relaxed or casual |
| Meaning | what is intended to be or actually is, expressed or indicated |

| Prefix | a word part added to the beginning of a root or base word |
| Root word | a word part to which a prefix and/or a suffix may be added to create a word |

| Synonym or Restatement Context Clues | use other words in the sentence that have a similar meaning to an unfamiliar word |
| Technical Meaning | the meaning of a word or phrase as it relates to a particular subject, discipline, field, profession or trade |
| Tone | the author's, character's , or narrator's attitude toward a subject |
