Physical science vocabulary for motion and scientific method

QuestionAnswer
acceleration A change in velocity over time
gravity The force of attraction between two objects.
kinetic energy Energy of motion.
meter Unit used to measure distance.
scientific method A series of steps used to solve problems.
terminal velocity When a falling object stops accelerating.
velocity Speed with direction.
potential energy The energy required to place an object in a position. This energy is stored in the object until the object moves.
problem A question to be considered, solved or answered
observation the act of noting and recording something with instruments or senses.
hypothesis a tentative explanation that accounts for a set of facts and can be tested by further investigation.
experiment a series of actions carried out to test a hypothesis, demonstrate a fact or find out what happens
variable Something that can or does change in an experiment.
celsius a temperature scale on which water freezes at 0° and boils at 100°
dependent variable the variable that you are looking for a change in.
graph information represented in the form of a picture, diagram or drawing
independent variable the variable that is changed on purpose in an experiment
speed a measurement of distance traveled over time
conclusion a summary of the results of the experimentation and a statement of how the results relate to the hypothesis
quantitative observations that involve measurements and numbers ("My brother is 30cm shorter than my sister")
qualitative observations that do not involve measurements and numbers ("My brother is shorter than my sister")
