| protagonist | the main character of a drama, novel, short story, or narrative poem |
| characterization | the act of creating or developing a character |
| direct characterization | the author directly states a character’s traits |
| indirect characterization | the author shows a character’s personality through his or her actions, thoughts, feelings, words and appearance, or through another character’s observations and reactions |
| setting | the time and place in which events in a story take place |
| plot | the sequence of events or actions in a short story, novel, play or narrative poem |
| exposition | reveals the setting, the relationships between characters, and the situation as it exists before conflict begins |
| rising action | the series of conflicts and crisis in a story that lead to the climax |
| climax | the turning point, the most intense moment - either mentally or in the action |
| falling action | events that lead toward a revelation or resolution in a work |
| resolution/denouement | The conclusion or tying together of all pieces of a work |
| conflict | the struggle between opposing forces in a work of literature |
| internal conflict | a struggle between between opposing forces in a work of literature |
| external conflict | a person in opposition to another person, nature or society |
| foreshadowing | the use of hints or clues in a narrative to suggest future action |
| suspense | the quality of a work that makes the reader or audience uncertain or tense about the outcome of events |
| theme | the central message of a literary work; the idea the author wishes to convey about a subject |
| mood | the atmosphere or predominant emotion in a literary work |
| tone | the attitude the author has toward the story subject, character, or audience. It is conveyed primarily through the author’s choice of diction, imagery, figurative language, details, and syntax. |
| details | facts, revealed by the author or speaker, that support the attitude or tone in a work |
| diction | word choice intended to convey a certain effect |
| denotation | dictionary definition of a word |
| connotation | feelings and attitudes associated with a word |
| imagery | the words or phrases a writer uses to represent persons, objects, actions, feelings and ideas descriptively by appealing to the senses |
| symbolism | the use of an object, person, place, or action that has a meaning in itself while standing for something larger than itself, such as a quality, attitude belief, or value |
