TermDefinition
simile compares two different things, using the words “as” or “like”
metaphor an implied comparison stating the resemblance between two things; does not use “like” or “as”
personification gives human qualities to animals, nonhuman beings, or inanimate objects
allusion an indirect reference to something outside the current literary work. The reference may be something in literature, history, modern culture, or another area.
hyperbole involves exaggeration. It is a deliberate, extravagant, and often outrageous exaggeration and may be used for either serious or comic effect
alliteration the repetition of beginning consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables
irony the expression of meaning by using language that signifies the opposite or lets the reader know something the character's don't know
idiom wording that means something other than the actual literal meaning; usually has meaning in only one language
