| Fetal phase | -weeks 9 to birth -placental membrane and amniotic sac form -reflexive behaviors -'active fetus' |
| Active fetus | -can develop either male or female genitalia depending on absence or presence of testosterone at 8 weeks -fetal breathing -swallowing amniotic fluid |
