Pre-natal Development

Germinal phase -conception to 2 weeks -zygote period -stem cells form embryo
Embryonic phase -3-8 weeks -neural tube -cephalocaudal development: development from head down -face development -placenta and umbilical cord
Fetal phase -weeks 9 to birth -placental membrane and amniotic sac form -reflexive behaviors -'active fetus'
Active fetus -can develop either male or female genitalia depending on absence or presence of testosterone at 8 weeks -fetal breathing -swallowing amniotic fluid
4 major developmental processes in cell development -cell division -cell migration -cell differentiation -selective cell death/apoptosis
Prenatal sensation Taste, smell, hearing, sensory learning
Teratogen Environmental agent that causes damage during prenatal development
When are teratogens most harmful? During the embryonic stage
Examples of teratogens Thalidomide, alcohol
Toxoplasmosis Disease caused by cats and uncooked meat
Neurogenesis Proliferation of neurons via cell division
