| fiction | a story that is made up |
| main conflict | the main character's problem in the story |
| summary | a retelling of the story from beginning to end with only the most important information; use SWBST for fiction |
| theme | The message of the story or the lesson learned from the story. |
| similes | figurative language comparing one thing to another using the words "like" or "as" |
| illustration | A picture that is drawn to help the reader understand the text. |
| selection | the entire reading passage or story |
| main idea | what a paragraph or entire selection is about |
| point of view (perspective) | The one who tells the story. |
| first person point of view | A character in the story tells the story. (Look for the pronouns I, me, my, and our in the story.) |
| third person point of view | An outside narrator tells the story. (Look for the pronouns him, her, them, and they in the story.) |
| plot | the main events in a story |
| author's voice | How does the author FEEL throughout the story? |
