Unit 3 Vocabulary

Properties of Matter

TermDefinition
Physical Property A characteristic that can be observed without changing the substance.
Oxidation A chemical property. Loss of electrons. An example of this is rusting.
Malleability A physical property. Can be hammered into thin sheets without breaking.
Chemical Property A characteristic that describes a substance's ability to change into a new substance.
Luster A physical property. The way light interacts with a substance. (shiny or dull)
Volume A physical property. Amount of space a substance takes up. (cm^3 or mL)
Density A physical property. The ratio of mass per volume of a substance (g/cm^3)
Hardness A physical property. The ability of a substance to scratch something or be scratched.
Mass A physical property. The amount of matter in a substance. (g)
Flammability A chemical property. Ability of a chemical to burn or ignite.
Solubility A physical property. The ability of a solid, liquid, or gas to dissolve in a solution.
Streak A physical property. The color of a mineral in powder form.
Reactivity A chemical property. The ability to undergo a chemical change.
Ductility A physical property. The ability to be stretched into a wire.
Characteristic Property A chemical or physical property that helps identify and classify substances. Density is an example.
Solute What is being dissolved. (Example- hot chocolate powder that you are putting into hot water)
Solvent What is doing the dissolving. (Example- hot water that you are putting hot chocolate into)
Conductivity A physical property. How well a substance can conduct electricity.
