---|---|
Atom | Basic building block of matter |
Element | Pure substance made up of only 1 type of atom |
Molecule | 2 or more atoms chemically bonded together (can be the same or different atoms) |
Compound | 2 or more different atoms chemically bonded together |
Isotope | Atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons |
Nucleus | Center of the atom – contains the protons and neutrons |
Proton | Positively charged particles |
Neutron | Neutral (no charge) particles |
Electron | Negatively charged particles |
Electron Cloud/Energy Rings | Region outside of the nucleus where electrons are found |
Atomic Number | Tells how many protons an element has |
Atomic Name | Identified the element |
Atomic Symbol | Abbreviation for the element |
Atomic Mass | Tells the number of protons + neutrons in the atom/element |
Ionic Bonds | Bonds formed between atoms due to losing or gaining electrons – results in electrostatic attraction between the atoms |
Covalent Bonds | Covalent Bonds |
Pure Substance | Substance composed of only one type of atom or one type of molecule/compound |
Mixture | Substance composed of 2 or more different pure substances that are not chemically combined |
Homogenous Mixture | Mixture with uniform distribution |
Heterogeneous Mixture | Mixture without uniform distribution |
Periods | Horizontal rows on the Periodic Table |
Groups/Families | Vertical columns on the Periodic Table |
