Atom Basic building block of matter
Element Pure substance made up of only 1 type of atom
Molecule 2 or more atoms chemically bonded together (can be the same or different atoms)
Compound 2 or more different atoms chemically bonded together
Isotope Atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Nucleus Center of the atom – contains the protons and neutrons
Proton Positively charged particles
Neutron Neutral (no charge) particles
Electron Negatively charged particles
Electron Cloud/Energy Rings Region outside of the nucleus where electrons are found
Atomic Number Tells how many protons an element has
Atomic Name Identified the element
Atomic Symbol Abbreviation for the element
Atomic Mass Tells the number of protons + neutrons in the atom/element
Ionic Bonds Bonds formed between atoms due to losing or gaining electrons – results in electrostatic attraction between the atoms
Covalent Bonds Covalent Bonds
Pure Substance Substance composed of only one type of atom or one type of molecule/compound
Mixture Substance composed of 2 or more different pure substances that are not chemically combined
Homogenous Mixture Mixture with uniform distribution
Heterogeneous Mixture Mixture without uniform distribution
Periods Horizontal rows on the Periodic Table
Groups/Families Vertical columns on the Periodic Table
Alkali Metals Group 1 elements
Alkaline Earth Metals Group 2 elements
Transition Metals Groups 3-12 elements
Inner-Transition Metals Lanthanides and Actinides elements
Halogens Group 17 elements
