Folklore Vocabulary

| fable | folktales that have a moral and usually have animal characters that teaches a lesson |
| heroine | a woman who commits an act of remarkable bravery or who has shown great courage |
| folklore | the traditional beliefs, practices, customs, stories, jokes, songs of people handed down orally or behaviorally from individual to individual |
| legend | stories shared and passed down from one generation to another |
| fairy tales | a type of folktale; usually set in non-existent places and features supernatural beings; it almost always has a happy ending |
| mythic hero | characters in myths that have the power to make extraordinary things happen |
| urban legends | a story based on hearsay and widely told as a true |
| tall tales | a greatly exaggerated story, difficult to believe |
| folk tale | stories that have been passed along by word of mouth; before being written down |
| myths | made up stories that explain the creation of something in nature; they sometimes have gods or goddesses in them |
| supernatural | something that cannot be explained by science or natural causes |
| culture | beliefs and customs of a group of people |
