What is pharmacology? study of drugs and their origin, nature, properties, and effects on living organisms
How are medicines classified? drugs that have the same effects fit under several things
What is a generic name? reflects the chemical name, but in the shorter term
What is brand name? the name manufactor uses to market the drug
What are the side effects of a drug? effects that are not desire and that occur in additon to the desired effects.
what are the effects of a drug? desired results of administration of a medication.
What is the mechanism of action? how a drug works
what is the dose? the amount of drug to be administered at one time
What do drugs cause? chemical substance that causes changes, physically, emotional
What is medicine? A drug used to prevent, treat, pr cure an illness
What are the three qualities medicine must have? effectiveness, saftey, and side effects
what does FDA mean? food and drug administration
sublingual? under the tongue
oral? swallowed and sbsorbed through the stomach
inhalation? inhaled by the patient
injection? injected into the muscle
rectal? suppository
tablets? compressed powder shaped into a disk
gel? substance that the patient swallows
