| How are drugs classified? | Each drug can be catagorized under a broad subcategory or subcategories. They are classified by their chemical composition, how they work, and the disease they treat. |
| Generic Name | Reflects the chemical name, but in shorter form. |
| Brand Name | The name the manufacturer uses to market the drug. |
| Indications | the reasons for administrating a medication or performing a treatment |
| Contra-indications | a factor that prevents the use of a medication or treatment |
| Dose | the amount of a drug to be administered at one time |
| Mechanism of Action | how a drug works |
| Effects | the desired results of administration of a medication |
| Side Effects | effects that are not desired and that occur in addition to the desired effects |
| Drugs | the chemical substances that cause changes, physical or emotional, in an individual |
| Medicine | is a drug used to prevent, treat, or cure and illness or pain |
| Prescription | written by the doctor |
| Over the counter | medicine that can be purchased without a prescription |
| Analgesics | relieve pain |
| Antibiotics | kill bacteria |
| Antihistamines | help allergies |
| Antacids | relieve heartburn |
| Sublingual | under the tounge |
| Oral | drug is swallowed or absorbed through the stomach or intestinal tract |
| Inhalation | gas or aerosol inhaled by the patient |
| Injection | drug is injected into the muscle mass |
| Nasogastic tube | goes through nose |
| G-tube | goes through stomach |
| Peg tube | goes through stomach |
| Rectal | Example: suppository |
| Tablets | compressed powder shaped into a disk |
| Liquid for injections | Epinephrine |
| Spray | Nitroglycerin sub-lingual spray |
| Liquid/vaporized | Albuterol by small-volume nebulizer |
| Gel | substance that the patient swallows |
| Suspension | drug particles mixed |
