Unit 3 Force

CIS 5th Grade Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Push To press against an object to move it away.
Pull To move an object toward or near another object.
Force A push or pull that causes an object to move, stop, or change direction.
Balanced Force An equal push on both sides of an object which results in no change in motion.
Unbalanced Force An unequal push on one side of an object which results in a change in motion.
Position The place where something is located; where something has been put.
Motion A change in the position of an object.
Gravity A force that pulls objects toward each other.
Friction The force that resists motion when two surfaces rub against each other.
Weight The force gravity exerts on an object's mass.
Magnetism A force of attraction between a magnet and certain types of metals.
Inertia The tendency of an object in motion to remain in motion or an object at rest to remain at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Testable Hypothesis An idea that can be tested by experiment or observation.
Variable A condition or factor that changes in an investigation so the effects can be observed.
Control The substance, object, or group in an experiment that is not changed.
Valid Conclusion Information describing what was learned from an investigation based on observations and collected data.
Reliability The quality of data to be true, correct, and dependable.
Spring scale is a weighing scale used to measure weight or force, such as the force of gravity, the strength of a persons grip or the power of a vehicle
Simple Machine any of several devices with few or no moving parts that are used to modify motion and the magnitude of a force in order to perform work.
Inclined plane a flat surface that makes an angle with the line of the horizon
lever is a long, sturdy body that rests on a support called a fulcrum
wedge is a simple machine used mainly to put in between two stones.
wheel and axle a wheel with a rod attached in the middle as an axle to help it to lift or move loads
pulley a simple machine that makes lifting something easier.
screw is a special kind of inclined plane. It's basically an inclined plane wrapped around a pole.
