PS chapter 3 quiz

QuestionAnswer
what is a solid? is the state of matter in which materials have a definite shape and a definite volume.
How can shape and volume be used to classify materials? Materials can be classified as solids, liquids, or gases based on whether their shapes and volumes are definite or variable.
what is a liquid? is the state of matter in which a material has a definite volume but not a definite shape.
What is a gas? is the state of matter in which a material has neither a definite shape nor a definite volume.
what are the 2 other states of matter? plasma, and Bose-Einstein condensate (or BEC).
What is kinetic energy? is the energy an object has due to its motion.
What does the kinetic theory of say about the motion of atoms? says that all particles of matter are in constant motion.
Materials are classified as solids, liquids, or gases based on their shape and volume.
Most of the matter of the universe exists in which state? plasma.
What is pressure? is the result of a force distributed over an area.
What causes gas pressure in a closed container? Collisions between particles of a gas and the walls of the container
What is the SI unit for force and what does it mean? Force is measured in newtons (N).
What is the SI unit for area and what does it mean? Area is measured in square meters (m2).
What is the SI unit for pressure and what does it mean? The SI unit for pressure, the pascal (Pa), is shorthand for newtons per square meter.
What is a kilopascal? One kilopascal (kPa) is equal to 1000 pascals.
What factors affect gas pressure? are its temperature, its volume, and the number of its particles.
What was physicist Jacques Charles results of his study? as temperature increases the volume will also increase
What is absolute zero? A temperature of 0 K
State Charles’s Law? that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature in kelvins if the pressure and the number of particles of the gas are constant.
What is the mathematical equation for Charles’s law? v1/t1=v2/t2
What was Robert Doyle’s conclusions? As pressure decreases volume will increase
state Boyle's law. the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure if the temperature and the number of particles are constant.
What is the mathematical equation for Boyle’s Law? P1/V1=P2/V2
What is the Combined Gas Law? law describes the relationship among the temperature, volume, and pressure of a gas when the number of particles is constant.
What is the mathematical equation for the Combined Gas Law? P1V1/T1=P2V2/T2
