| anemia | deficiency of circulating red blood cells; symptom of disease, not a disease |
| avitaminosis | vitamin deficiency |
| coenzyme | compound that activates an enzyme |
| cofactor | factor that must be present for other factors to be active |
| fat-soluble vitamin | vitamin that is soluble in fat and therefore is stored in body; vitamins A,D,E, and K are fat-soluble |
| hemoglobin | iron-containing pigment on red blood cells that carries oxygen to the tissues |
| hypervitaminosis | disorder caused by the intake of too many vitamins; more common with fat-soluble vitamins |
| intrinsic factor | naturally produced protein that is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12 |
