TERMDEFINITION
ANALGESIC a drug that relieves pain by reducing the perception of pain
ANTIINFLAMMATORY a drug that reduces swelling, redness, and pain and that promotes healing
ANTISEPTIC a substance that slows or stops growth of microorganisms on surfaces such as skin
ANTITUSSIVE a drug that can decrease the coughing reflex of the central nervous system
ASA acetylsalicylic acid (asprin)
BULK FORMING fiber used as a stimulant to the intestines or to cause a feeling of fullness to decrease appetite
DESQUAMATION a normal process of shedding the top layer of the skin, also known as exfoliation
EXPECTORANT chemical that causes the removal of mucous secretions from the respiratory system; loosens and thins sputum and bronchial secretions for ease of expectoration
KERATOLYTIC a drug that causes shedding of the outer layer of the skin
OTC over the counter
PROPHYLAXIS treatment given before an event to prevent the event from happening
PROTECTANT a substance that acts as a barrier between the skin and an irritant
PRURITUS itching
ROA route of administration
SUNSCREEN a substance that protects the skin from ultraviolet light, which causes sunburn; skin protection factor (SPF) rates effectiveness
