Unit 2C Vocab

QuestionAnswer
prefix a morpheme added to the beginning of a word to modify its meaning, for example as pre- in prefix, con- in conjure, re- in reheat, etc.
suffix a morpheme added to the end of a word to modify its meaning.
morpheme the smallest linguistic unit within a word that can carry a meaning, such as "un-", "break", and "-able" in the word "unbreakable"
affix parts of a word that are at the beginning or end and change the meaning of the word
context clues clue words used to help readers understand the meaning of unknown words
figurative language language that contains or uses figures of speech, especially metaphors, similes, imagery, personification, hyperbole, etc.
imagery the work of one who makes images or visible representations of objects
text structures how the author organizes their non-fiction text. Examples include: compare and contrast, cause and effect, sequence, description, and problem/solution
