| ER | Extended-release |
| DR | Delayed-release |
| / (slash mark) | Separates two doses or indicates "per" ; Can be mistaken as the number 1, use "per" instead to separate doses |
| x3d | "For 3 days"; Can be mistaken as "3 doses" |
| ZnSO4 | Zinc Sulfate; Can be mistaken as morphine sulfate, so use the complete drug name |
| ʒ | Symbol for dram |
| APAP | Acetaminophen; not typically recognized as acetaminophen, so use the complete drug name |
