equator | An imaginary line that circles the earth halfway between the north and South Pole. It is 0 degrees latitude. |
latitude | Distances north and south of the equator, measured by a set of imaginary lines that run east and west. |
prime meridian | An imaginary line circling the earth, separating the earth into the eastern and western hemisphere. It is 0 degrees longitude. |
longitude | Distances east and west of the Prime Meridian, measured by a set of imaginary lines that run north and south. |
degree | a unit of measurement that indicates the distance between lines of latitude and longitude. |
cardinal directions | The directions north, east, south and west on a compass rose. |
intermediate directions | The directions northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest on a compass rose. |
compass Rose | A drawing on a map that shows direction. |
scale | A unit of measurement on a map that is used to represent a distance on earth. |
symbol | Located in a map key to show representation of items. |
map | Key a list of map symbols that show what each symbol represents. |
locator | small map used to show the specific location of a larger map |
political map | a map that shows boundaries, state capitals and cities. |
physical map | a map that shows geographic landforms and other features, like rivers, lakes and mountain ranges. |
historical map | a map that shows information about past events. |
