Waves

TermDefinition
Transverse Waves Causes the medium to move perpendicular to the direction of the wave
Longitudinal Waves Causes the medium to move parallel to the direction of the wave
Refraction Occurs when waves bend as they enter a new medium at an angle
Reflection When waves bounce back from a surface they cannot pass through
Diffraction When sound waves spread out and travel around obstacles
Destructive Interference Occurs when the crests of one wave overlap the troughs, or lowest points, of another wave
Constructive Interference When the crests, or highest points, of one wave overlap the crests of the other wave
Interference When two or more waves meet, they interact with each other
Mechanical Waves Disturbance in matter that transfers energy through the matter
Electromagnetic Waves Waves that are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field
Mechanical Waves Types Transverse or Longitudinal Waves
Electromagnetic Waves Types ONLY Transverse
