ASHP | American Society of Health-system Pharmacists; second oldest pharmacy organization founded in 1942 |
ASHP Model Curriculum for Pharmacy Tech. Education and Training | Program that provides details on how to meet the ASHP goals for pharmacy technician training curricula |
BOP | Board of Pharmacy; a state-managed agency that licenses pharmacists and may register or license pharmacy technicians to work in a pharmacy |
CPhT | Certified Pharmacy Technician; a technician who has passed the national certification exam |
Closed Door Pharmacy | Pharmacy in which medications are called in from institutions, such as long-term care facilities, and are then delivered; not open to the public |
Communication | The ability to express oneself in such a way that one is readily and clearly understood |
Community Pharmacy | A.K.A. Outpatient or Retail Pharmacy; serve patients in a community purchasing prescribed and OTC medications |

Confidentiality | Practice of keeping privileged customer information from being disclosed without consent |
CE | Continuing Education; courses beyond basic technician education --- usually required for license or certification renewals |
Hyperalimentation | Parenteral (intravenous) nutrition for patients who are unable to eat solids or liquids |
Inpatient Pharmacy | Pharmacy in a hospital or institutional setting |
Licensed Pharmacy Technician | A Pharmacy Tech. who is licensed by the state board; ensures that the individual has at least the minimum level of competency required by the profession |
NABP | National Association of Boards of Pharmacy; organization for members of state boards of pharmacy |
NHA | National Healthcareer Association; certification organization for a variety of healthcare careers, including the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) |
NPTA | National Pharmacy Technician Association; second oldest organization for pharmacy technicians founded in 1999 |
Nondiscretionary Duties | Tasks that do not require professional judgement such as repackaging medications, managing inventory, filling automated dispensing machines, and billing |
Outpatient Pharmacy | Pharmacy that serves patients in a community or ambulatory setting |
Parenteral Medications | Used to describe medications administered by injection, such as intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously |
PTAC | Pharmacy Technician Accreditation Commission; agency formed partnership between ASHP and ACPE for review and accreditation of pharmacy technician education and training programs |
PTCB | Pharmacy Technician Certification Board; National board for the certification of pharmacy technicians |
Professionalism | Conforming to the right principles of conduct as accepted by others in the profession |
RPhT | Registered Pharmacy Technicians; are registered through the state board of pharmacy, registration process maintains a list of those working in pharmacies, may require a background check --- does not guarantee the level of registrants knowledge or skills |
SEPhT | Society for the Education of Pharmacy Technicians; national technician organization with a free membership that offers tools and useful information; used in training and education for students and current technicians |
TPN | Total Parenteral Nutrition; large-volume intravenous nutrition administered through the central vein (subclavian vein) which allows for a higher concentration of solutions |
