| Short Acting Beta Agonist | Activate beta 2 receptors in the lung, leading to relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscle in turn leading to bronchodilation and an increase in bronchial airflow |
| Long Acting Beta Agonist | Activate beta 2 receptors in the lung, leading to relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscle in turn leading to bronchodilation and an increase in bronchial airflow |
| Inhaled Anticholinergic | block the effects of acetylcholine leading to bronchial smooth muscle relaxation |
| Methylxanthines | relax the smooth muscle of the bronchial airways and pulmonary blood vessels |
| Leukotreine Receptor Agonist | inhibit the effects of leukotrienes to reduce bronchial smooth muscle contraction airway edema and mucous formation |
| Phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor | inhibits the enzyme PDE4 an effect that is thought to reduce inflammation |
| Anti- IgE Antibody | blocks the inflammatory effects of IgE |
| Mast Cell Stabilizer | inhibits degranulation of mast cells of the immune system, preventing the release of histamine and inhibiting inflammation |
| Mucolytic Agent | reduces the viscosity of mucous secreted in the lungs and aids in the removal of these secretions through coughing and or drainage |
