Inhalant Anesthetics
NERVOUS SYSTEM: Inhalant Anesthetics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Isoflurane (IsoFlo, Isothesia) | One of the least soluble of inhalant agents. Very rapid induction and recovery. Allows stable heart rhythm and does not decrease cardiac output. Metabolized at a very low rate. |
| Sevoflurane (SevoFlo) | Very rapid induction and recovery time. Only 3% is metabolize. Often used in high-risk, small animal patients because of its safety and rapid smooth induction |
| Halothan (Fluothane) | Sensitizes the heart to the catecholamines, resulting in possible cardiac dysrhythmias. Metabolized at 25%. No longer available in US. |
| Methoxyflurane (Metofane) | Very slow induction and recovery time. Most potent of the agents. Has been associated with renal toxicity. Not available in US. |
| Nitrous Oxide | May be used as an adjunct to more potent agents during mask induction to speed the induction of anesthesia. Must always be given with oxygen to prevent hypoxia. |
