Seizures
NERVOUS SYSTEM: Drugs given to prevent or control seizures

| Diazepam (Valium) | Tranquilizer with potent antiseizure properties. Administered IV. Lasts 3-4 hours. |
| Pentobarbital (Nembutal) | Short-acting barbiturate that is effective for controlling seizures. Administered IV. Lasts 1-3 hours. |
| Phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton) | Antiseizure drug available in oral for dogs and cats and injectable forms for horses. |
| Primidone (Mylepsin, Neurosyn) | A portion of the dose is metabolized to phenobarbital by the liver. |
| Bromide | Old anticonvulsant mainly used today as an adjunct to phenobarbital or primidone therapy |
| Gabapentin (Neurontin) | May be used as an adjunctive treatment of seizures that are difficult to control, as well as for partial complex seizures or pain control. |
| Levetiracetam (Kappra) | May be useful as an adjunctive for refractory canine epilepsy |
| Zonisamide (Zonegran) | Used similar to levetiractam |
| Adverse side effects | Drowsiness, CNS depression, anxiety, agitation, polyuria, polydipsia, hepatotoxicity |
