| Author's Purpose | The reason why an author or authors write literature. |
| Persuade | author's goal is to convince the reader to agree with the author's opinion. |
| Inform | author's goal is to enlighten the reader with topics that are usually real or contain facts with valid information. |
| Entertain | author's goal is to provide enjoyment for the reader. |
| Examples of Author's Purpose: To Persuade | advertisements, commercials, newspaper editorials |
| Examples of Author's Purpose: To Inform | textbooks, cookbooks, encyclopedias, newspaper |
| Examples of Author's Purpose: To Entertain | poems, stories, plays, comic strips, short story, novels, comedies, riddles, jokes, song lyrics |
| Audience | Who the writer writes for (young adults, parents, children, policemen, voters, scientists, etc.) |
| PIE | Author's Purpose: Persuade, Inform, Entertain |
| Mood | the particular feeling or atmosphere something has or creates. |
| atmosphere | the overall feeling of a place. |
| tone | attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character |
| attitude | the way you feel or think about something. |
| negative | not positive or helpful |
| nuetral | not positive or negative |
| positive | good or useful |
| objective | based on facts and not influenced by feelings |
| Inference | a conclusion reached from evidence and observation |
| subjective | based on feelings, emotions, and opinions |
| symbol | something that represents something else |
| symbols in literature | authors can use names, colors, numbers, or things to represent other ideas |
| foreshadow | to warn that something may happen |
| flashback | looking back at an event that happened earlier |
| infer | to make an educated guess based on prior background knowledge |
| predict | give a reasonable guess about what may happen next in the text based on context clues |
