Topic 1 - Location vocabulary words

prime meridian an imaginary line that divides the earth into eastern and western hemispheres
equator an imaginary line that divides earth into northern and southern hemisphers
compass rose a symbol on a map that shows direction
latitude the earth's imaginary line that run east and west and measures north and south
longitude the earth's imaginary line that run north and south and measures east and west
political map shows the boundaries of a place
physical map shows the physical features of a place or country, like rivers, mountains, forest, lakes
key or legend a list of symbols and what they stand for on a map
resource map shows the different resources present in the area
elevation map shows the difference in elevation
road map shows different roads, highways, or railways in the area
scale a set of lines marked off on a map to help estimate the distance between two places
