commom lit terms

TermDefinition
Alliteration repetition of constant sounds at the beginning of a word. ex. Sally sell sea shells by the sea shore
Allusion a reference to a famous person, place, event or work of literature ex. My bother said he wanted to be smart like Albert Einstine
Analyzing to break down and examine the parts of something to better understand it. ex. My mom had to step by step tell what the word meant.
Annotating is a way of marking your textbook by talking key points form text ex. I did not annadate so I do not know were answer is.
Analogy make a comparison between two or more things that are similar in some ways but not alike. ex. Flower
Argument a bad way to present believe, conclusion or stance. the author makes a claim. ex. My brother argues about most things.
Assonance the repetition of vowel sounds with in non-rhyming words. ex Fleet feet sweep by the sleeping geese
Author's purpose authors reson for writing ex. P I E (Persaude, inform, entertain)
Central Idea The main idea is the point of the paragraph. It is important though about the topic. To figure out the main idea, what is ths person, things or idea. ex. What the story is about
Characters people, animals, or imaginary creatures that are in movie
Antagonist Character working against main character ex. scar in lion king
Protagonist the main good character ex. Simba
Dynamic characters a character who changes through the whole course of the movie ex. Kevin from Home Alone
Static characters a character who does not go through significant changes throughout the course of the show. ex. the snow queen from Narnia
Round characters a character who is complex (a lot of personality and characteristics) ex. Harry potter
Flat characters character who is not complicated, no personality, not contributing much of the story. ex. the shark from Nemo
Characterization the way the writer creates and develops characteristics. ex. how the characters personality is
Direct characterization a writer states the characteristic traits or characteristic. ex tell you character personality
Indirect characterization a writer depends on the reader to draw conclusions about the character traits. ex. were another does not directly tell you what the character personality is like
Comparing and Contrasting finding the difference and the similarity of things ex. when you compare and contrast lion vs tiger
