Story Elements

TermDefinition
Plot the movement of a story through a sequence of events
Exposition The basic information that the readers need to understand the events of the story. This includes the characters and setting.
Rising Action a series of events that lead up to the climax of the story.
Climax Most exciting moment of the story; turning point
Falling Action occurs after the climax has been reached and the conflict has been resolved.
Resolution draws the action to a close and answers most of the remaining questions in the story.
Setting the location and time in which the action of a story takes place.
Character a person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story.
Conflict the struggle between different characters in the story.
Protagonist the hero of the story, the main character and the focus of the action.
Antagonist the character that opposes the hero (evil enemy)
Theme the message of the story or the lesson to learn from the text
