Unit 1
Matter and Its Interactions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element. |
| molecule | A group of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds; a molecule is the smallest unit of a compound that keeps all the properties of that substance. |
| property | A characteristic of a material. |
| mass | A measure of the amount of matter in an object. |
| weight | A measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object; its value can change with the location of the object in the universe. |
| volume | The amount of space that an object takes up. |
| conservation of mass | The principle that matter can neither be made nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another. |
| mixture | A substance that contains two or more substances which are not chemically combined. |
| pure substance | A sample of matter, either a single element or a single compound, that has definite chemical and physical properties. |
| compound | A substance made up of two or more different types of atoms joined by chemical bonds. |
| solid | The state in which a substance maintains a fixed volume and shape. The particles are packed closely together. |
| liquid | The state in which a substance adapts to the shape of its container, and mostly maintains its volume. The particles are touching but they can move past each other. |
| gas | The state in which a substance expands to occupy the volume and shape of its container. The particles are fast moving and can spread apart from each other. |
| thermal energy | The total kinetic energy of a substance's particles. |
| chemical bond | The attractive force that holds atoms or subunits of atoms together. |
| chemical reaction | A process in which one or more substances undergo a change to become a different substance altogether. |
