What is News
| Term | Definition |

| Consent | whilst the mass media (such as news) claim to be holding those in power to account, really they work to encourage the public to consent to the status quo as established by the powerful. |
| Citizen Journalism | when news stories are created by people who are not considered professional journalism, i.e. those who do not work for an established news provider. |
| (The) Fourth Estate | Those that describe the news industries as this suggest that it works as a conduit between those in power and the public, supposedly holding the former to account. |
| Gatekeepers | these are the people that get to select what news the public gets. |
| Imagined Communities | suggests that media, like newspapers, can give us a sense of belonging to a group even if we can't see that group physically around us. |
| News Values | define the types of stories gatekeepers considered 'newsworthy'. |
| Ownership | This term is self-explanatory, howver it is important to tihnk about because companies often have specific ideological views (beliefs or values), which shape their political agenda. |
| Public Sphere | the space in which media can play a part in encouraging dialogue between the public and those in power |
| Shareability | This term refers to the fact that the more a story is likely to be shared by users, the more it will be visible; therefore stories need to have elements that encourage people to want to share them. |
