Acids, Bases, and Ph
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Acid | Produces H+ ions in water |
| Base | Produces OH- ions in water |
| Salt | Compound formed when negative ions from an acid combine with the positive ions of a base |
| Indicator | Compound that changes color in the presence of an acid or a base |
| Buffer | Solution containing ions that minimize effects on pH |
| pH | Measures how many H+ are in a solution |
| Neutralization | Chemical reaction between an acid and a base that forms a salt and water |
| alloy | Mixture of metallic elements |
| Solute | Substance being dissolved |
| Concentration | Amount of solute in the solvent (%) |
| Solvent | Substance doing the dissolving |
| Solubility | How well something dissolves in something else |
| Solution | Homogeneous mixture, can not see the individual particles |
| Ionization | Neutral atoms in compounds become ions when mixed with water |
| Unsaturated | Can hold more solute |
| Dissociation | Ionic solids do this when mixed with water |
| Saturated | Contains all the solute it can |
| Electrolyte | Produces ions in solution with water |
| Supersaturated | Holds more solute than expected at that temperature |
