Physical Science Chapter 1 Motion Vocabulary

TermDefinition
motion a change in an object’s position relative to a reference point.
displacement the distance and direction of the object’s change in position.
speed the distance an object travels per unit of time.
reference point a basis or standard for evaluation, assessment, or comparison; a criterion.
coordinate systems a method for identifying the location of a point on the earth
distance a scalar quantity that refers to "how much ground an object has covered" during its motion.
constant speed If an object (such as a car) neither slows down nor speeds up, the car is traveling at a constant speed.
average speed the total distance traveled divided by the total time of travel.
instantaneous speed the speed at a given point in time.
velocity includes the speed of an object and the direction of its motion
momentum the product of its mass and velocity.
Pangaea the single land formation found on Earth 280-230 million years ago. It is believed this massive land formation broke apart to form what we now know as the continents on Earth.
relative motion the calculation of the motion of an object with regard to some other moving or stationary object.
mass a measure of the amount of matter in an object has.
x-axis the horizontal axis of a system of coordinates, points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates.
y-axis the vertical axis of a system of coordinates, points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates.
scalar A quantity which does not depend on direction.
vector A quantity that has magnitude and acts in a particular direction.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
