PS Matter

matter anything that has mass and takes up space
substance a single kind of matter that always has a specific makeup, or composition
physical property a characteristic that can be observed without changing the matter into another type of matter
chemical property a characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
atom the basic particle from which all elements are made; the smallest particle of an element that has the properties of that element
element substances that are made up of only one type of atom
molecule a group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
compound a substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a set ratio
mixture made up of two or more substances that are together in the same place, but their atoms are not chemically bonded
mass the amount of matter in an object
volume the amount of space that matter occupies
weight the measure of the force of gravity on an object
density a measure of the mass of a material in a given volume
physical change a change in the form or appearance of matter but does not turn any substance in the matter into a different substance
chemical change a change in matter that produces one or more new substances
