Properties of Matter

5th grade properties of matter

TermDefinition
Chemical change A reaction or a change in a substance produced by chemical means that forms a new substance
Physical change A change in which the form or shape of a substance changes; does not result in the formation of a new substance
Dissolve To mix with a liquid so that the result is a liquid that is the same throughout
Characteristic A feature, quality, property, or trait of an object or organism
Gas One of the fundamental states of matter without a definite volume or shape
Liquid One of the fundamental states of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape
Solid One of the fundamental states of matter with a definite shape and a definite volume
Mass The amount of matter an object contains
Matter Substance that has mass and takes up space
Volume The amount of space that an object or substance occupies
Weight A measure of the force of gravity on an object
Mixture two or more substances are physically combined
Condensation As water cools in temperature, water molecules gather from a gas in the air to liquid on surfaces such as a glass or window.
Melting a substance changes from a solid to a liquid
Evaporation a substance changes from a liquid to a gas
Condense a substance changes from a gas to a liquid
Freeze a substance changes from a liquid to a solid
