Geography Terms

TermDefinition
Life expectancy The average number of years that a person can expect to live.
Quantitative data Any information that can be recorded as numbers.
Qualitative data Any information that can be recorded in words.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Total monetary value of all the goods and services produced by a country over a specific time period.
Literacy rates Statistical measure of the percentage of people in an area or population that can read and write.
Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) International economic organisation of 34 countries, set up in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade.
Human Development Index (HDI) Tool developed by the United Nations to grade and rank the social and economic development of the world's countries in order from most to least developed. - measures human wellbeing
Choropleth maps Map showing change in particular data across an area by using shades of the same colour.
Cartogram Type of map distorted to show a representation of statistical data.
Geographic Information System (GIS) Software application designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyse, manage and present geographical information of all kinds.
Scatter plot Type of graph showing two sets of data by plotted points along two axes, the pattern of which shows their correlation.
Correlation Statistical measure indicating the extent to which variables are related.
Fertility rates Statistical measure of the average number of children women in a particular area will have throughout their lives.
