What does a simple machine always change? The size or direction of a force
When you open a can of paint with a lever, the outer rim of the can serves as what? A fulcrum
What increases the effort force? A wheel and axle
What does a wedge do? It pushes things apart
What is a screw? An inclined plane wrapped around a pole, shaft or cylinder
What does an inclined plane do? It moves objects through a distance while going up a ramp
A screw moves things up what kind of ramp? A spiral ramp
What is an example of work? A seesaw
How is work done? On an object when a force moves the object through a distance
What are you doing when you push your bike up a hill? Exerting force
List 3 examples of acceleration? riding down a hill on your scooter, slowing down and turning
What causes motion to stop and start? Forces
To ride your bike faster what do you need to do? Push the pedals with more force or push with the same force for a longer time
What is an inclined plane? A sloping surface such as a ramp. It can be used to alter the effort and distance involved in doing work, such as lifting loads.
Name three types of inclined planes? Staircase, ramp, bottom of a bath tub
What is a lever? A straight rod or board that pivots on a point known as a fulcrum.
What happens when you push down on one end of a lever? It results in the upward motion of the opposite end of the fulcrum.
Name 4 examples of a lever? A door on hinges, seesaw, hammer and bottle opener
Describe what a pulley is? A wheel that usually has a groove around the outside edge and the groove is for a rope or belt to move around the pulley
What happens when you pull down on a rope on a pulley? It can lift an object attached to the rope making work easier
If a rope on a pulley is pulled down, why does it make the work easier? Gravity makes it easier
Name 3 examples of a pulley? Flag pole, crane, mini-blinds
Name 2 examples of a screw? A bolt, spiral staircase
Name 6 examples of a simple machine? A screw, wheel and axle, wedge, pulley, inclined plane and lever
What is a wedge? Two inclined planes joined back to back that is used to split things
Name 3 examples of wedge? An axe, zipper and knife
What is a wheel and axle? A larger wheel (or wheels) connected to a smaller cylinder (axle) and is fastened to a wheel so that they turn together.
What happens when an axle is turned? The wheel moves a greater distance than the axle, but less force is needed to move it. and the axle moves a shorter distance but it takes greater force to move it.
Name 3 examples of a wheel and axle? A door knob, wagon, toy car
