QuestionAnswer
Zone of Aeration The tiny spaces between sand, soil and rock that is filled with air.
Zone of Saturation Tiny spaces between sand, soil and rock that is filled with water.
Aquifer Common name for Zone of Saturation. Water (H2O) is pumped from here.
Water Table Bottom of Aeration Zone (deep) - Top of Saturated Zone (shallow) - divides the 2 zones. Can be shallow or deep.
Bedrock Solid rock that the water can not penetrate.
Groundwater Water that is found in cracks and spaces of soil, sand and rock. Groundwater is pulled down by gravity.
Evaporation Water changes from a liquid to a gas.
Condensation Water vapor on the air is changed to liquid H2O.
Precipitation H2O is released from clouds in the form of snow, hail, rain and sleet.
Runoff Precipitation that flows over hard surfaces on the land.
Transpiration Evaporation of water from plant leaves.
Solution The mixing and dissolving of something into a liquid (breaks down).
Dilution To reduce, or make less, the concentration by adding more water or another liquid.
Aquatard A hard surface such as granite, that does not allow water to pass through
Plume Border of Polluted or contaminated area.
Area Source Pollution over a wide area. Consentration levels are constant - neither high nor low
Point Source Pollution that has a source of a single point. Concentration levels range from high to low.
Contamination Impurities in water source caused by bacteria, chemicals, sewage, or animal waste
