| ACCOMMODATION | the change that occurs in the ocular lens when it focuses at various distances |
| ACOUSTIC NERVE | the cranial nerve that controls the senses of hearing and equilibrium and that eventually leads to the cerebellum and the medulla |
| AQUEOUS HUMOR | the fluid found in the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye |
| AUDITORY CANAL | a 1-inch segment of tube that runs from the external ear to the middle ear |
| AUDITORY OSSICLES | the set of three small, bony structures in the ear (i.e., the malleus, incus, and stapes) |
| CATARACT | loss of transparency of the lens of the eye |
| CONES | photoreceptors responsible for color (daylight vision) |
| CORNEA | the transparent tissue covering the anterior portion of the eye |
| CYCLOPLEGIA | paralysis of the ciliary muscle in the eye |
| EUSTACHIAN TUBE | a tubular structure in the middle ear that runs to the nasopharynx (throat) |
| LABYRINTH | a bony maze composed of the vestibile, cochlea, and semicircular canals of the inner ear |
| MIOSIS | contraction of the pupil |
| MYDRIASIS | dilation of the pupil |
| MYOPIA | nearsightedness |
| OPHTHALMIC | pertaining to the eye |
| OTIC | pertaining to the ear |
| RODS | photoreceptors responsible for black and white colors (night vision) that respond to dim light |
| TYMPANIC MEMBRANE | a membranous skin that separates the external ear from the middle ear |
