| communicator | the person sending a message |
| receiver | the person accepting a message |
| perceptual screen | a window through which one interacts with others. It influences the quality, accuracy, and clarity of the communication |
| message | the thoughts and feelings that the communicator is attempting to evoke in the receiver |
| feedback | information fed back that completes two-way communication |
| language | the words, their pronunciations , and the methods of combining them used and understood by a group of people |
| data | uninterpreted and analyzed elements of a message |
| information | data that have been interpreted, analyzed, and have meaning to some user |
| richness | the ability of a medium to convey meaning to a receiver |
| employee voice behavior | communication of suggestions, concerns, information about problems, or work-related opinions to effect constructive changes in the workplace |
| reflective listening | carefully listening to message and immediately repeating it back to the speaker |
| two-way communication | an interactive form of communication in which there is an exchange of thoughts, feelings, or both |
| one-way communication | communication in which a person sends a message to another person and no feedback, questions, or interaction follows |
| barriers to communication | factors that distort , disrupt, or even halt successful communication |
| gateways to communication | openings that break down communication barriers |
| incivility | discourteous communication and rude behavior that are disrespectful, hurtful, or injurious |
| civility | communication and behavior that respect the integrity and dignity of the individual |
| defensive communication | message that are aggressive, malevolent, passive, or withdrawn |
| nondefensive communication | messages that are assertive, direct, and powerful |
| nonverbal communication | all elements of communication that do not involve words or language |
| proxemics | the study of an individual's perception and use of space |
| territorial space | bands of concentric space radiating outward from the body |
| kinesics | the study of the body movement and posture |
| communicative disease | loneliness and social isolation resulting from the absence of heartfelt communication in relationships |
| information communication technology (ICT) | an extensive category of new developments in interpersonal communication that allow fast, even immediate, access to information |
