Review of Energy Transformations Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Energy Transformation processes that convert energy from one type (e.g., kinetic, gravitational potential, chemical energy) into another.
Conservation of Energy a principle stating that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can be altered from one form to another.
Kinetic Energy energy which a body possesses by virtue of being in motion.
Potential Energy the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position relative to others, stresses within itself, electric charge, and other factors.
Mechanical Energy the energy that is possessed by an object due to its motion or due to its position.
Thermal Energy the energy that is generated and measured by heat
Radiant Energy energy transmitted in wave motion, especially electromagnetic wave motion.
Sound Energy the energy produced by vibrating sound waves
Electrical Energy energy made available by the flow of electric charge through a conductor.
Chemical Energy Energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds. It may be released during a chemical reaction,
Nuclear Energy the energy released during nuclear fission or fusion, especially when used to generate electricity.
