Term | Definition |

Universe | all existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos. The universe is believed to be at least 10 billion light years in diameter and contains a vast number of galaxies |
Galaxy | a system of millions or billions of stars, together with gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction. |
Disk shaped Galaxy | a galaxy characterized by a galactic disc, a flattened circular volume of stars. |
Spiral Shaped Galaxy | Twisted collections of stars and gas that often have beautiful shapes and are made up of hot young stars. ... Most spiral galaxies contain a central bulge surrounded by a flat, rotating disk of stars. |
Irregular Shaped Galaxy | any galaxy that does not neatly fit into one of the categories of the Hubble classification scheme. They have no defined shape nor structure and may have formed from collisions, close encounters with other galaxies or violent internal activity. |
Elliptical Shaped Galaxy | galaxy that has a generally elliptical shape and that has no apparent internal structure or spiral arms. |
Milky Way | the galaxy of which the sun and the solar system are a part and which contains the myriads of stars that create the light of the Milky Way |
Light Year | a unit of astronomical distance equivalent to the distance that light travels in one year, which is 9.4607 × 1012 km (nearly 6 trillion miles). |
Cluster | a group of stars that share a common origin and are gravitationally bound for some length of time. |
Andromeda Galaxy | a spiral galaxy, appearing to the naked eye as a fuzzy oval patch in the constellation Andromeda; it is a close neighbor to our own galaxy. |
