Review of Vocabulary for Seasons

TermDefinition
Orbit The curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a star, planet, or moon, especially a periodic elliptical revolution.
Tilt-23.5 The angle that the earth is tilted toward the sun.
Axis An imaginary line about which a body rotates.
Northern Hemisphere The part of the earth that is located above (north) of the equator.
Light Intensity the strength or amount of light produced by a specific source.
Southern Hemisphere The part of the earth that is located below (south) of the equator.
March Equinox The Sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. It's called the “celestial” equator because it's an imaginary line in the sky above the Earth's equator. The length of night and the length of day are almost exactly equal.
September Equinox The moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading southward. It marks the point in the calendar at which the length of night and the length of day are almost exactly equal.
June Solstice The moment during the year when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest north in the Northern Hemisphere. It marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
December Solstice The moment during the year when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest south in the Northern Hemisphere. It marks the shortest day of the year.
Tropic of Cancer the parallel of latitude 23°26ʹ north where the sun appears to turn after reaching its greatest declination,
Tropic of Capricorn the parallel of latitude 23°26ʹ south where the sun appears to turn after reaching its greatest declination,
Earth's Day The 24 hour period that marks one rotation on the earth's axis
Earth's Year The 365 1/4 days it takes the earth to complete one revolution around the sun.
