Newton's Laws
Review of Vocabulary of Newton's Laws
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Force | A force is any interaction that, when unopposed, will change the motion of an object. |
Unbalanced Force | Two forces acting on an object are not equal in size, |
Velocity | The speed (distance/time) of an object in a specific direction |
Momentum | The strength or force that something has when it is moving |
Friction | A force between two surfaces that are sliding, or trying to slide, across each other. It always works in the direction opposite to the direction in which the object is moving, or trying to move. |
Gravity | The force by which a planet or other body draws objects toward its center. |
Mass | A measure of the amount of matter in an object |
Balanced Force | A force that is opposite in direction and equal in size. it is considered to be in a state of equilibrium. When forces are balanced there is no change in direction. |
Net Force | The sum of all the forces acting on an object. |
Inertia | The tendency for an object to continue same speed or velocity until another force acts upon it |
Acceleration | The rate at which velocity changes with time |
Newton | Force necessary to provide a mass of one kilogram with an acceleration of one meter per second per second. |
Tension | A force that tends to stretch or elongate something. |
Tectonic | Of or relating to changes in the structure of the Earth's surface |
Newton's First Law of Motion | A body is at rest or moving at a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or keep moving in a straight line at constant speed unless it is acted upon by a force. Law of Inertia |
Newton's Second Law of Motion | A force to be equal to change in momentum (mass times velocity) per change in time. Force=Mass X Acceleration |
Newton's Third Law of Motion | When two bodies interact, they apply forces to one another that are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. Law of action/reaction. |
Applied Force | A force that is applied to an object by a person or another object. |
