Counting Atoms
Review of Counting Atoms Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Atom | The basic unit of a chemical element |
Element | The smallest substance that cannot be broken down through regular chemical reactions |
Periodic Table | A table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number, usually in rows, so that elements with similar atomic structure (and hence similar chemical properties) appear in vertical columns. |
Molecule | A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
Chemical Formula | A simple representation, in writing, of a three dimensional molecule that exists. |
Subscripts | Numbers that come after a symbol and below. Subscripts tell you the number of. atoms of that element. If an element does not have a subscript, then it is understood that the subscript is 1 |
Coefficients | A number placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula. It shows how many atoms or molecules of the substance are involved in the reaction. |
