Review of Atoms Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Atom | The basic unit of a chemical element |
Structure | An atom has a nucleus with protons and neutrons surrounded by an electron cloud containing electrons |
Electron | The smallest part of an atom. It is negatively charged and is outside the nucleus in the electron cloud |
Electrical Charge | Each part of the atom has a charge. Electrons are negative. Protons are positive. Neutrons have no charge. |
Protons | The positively charged part of the atom located in the nucleus. |
Neutron | The neutrally charged part of the atom located in the nucleus |
Atomic Mass | The total mass of the atom which is the mass of the number of protons and the number of neutrons |
Element | Any substance that cannot be broken down into smaller substances by regular chemical reactions |
Periodic Table | A table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number, usually in rows, so that elements with similar atomic structure (and hence similar chemical properties) appear in vertical columns. |
Location | The location is where the parts of the atom are found. The electrons are found outside the nucleus while the protons and neutrons are found inside the nucleus. |
Atomic Number | The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place in the periodic table. |
Nucleus | The positively charged center of the atom consisting of protons and neutrons |
