Energy Vocabulary

Physical Science Grade Five/Energy Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
The type of energy that is produced by the vibration of matter Sound energy
The type of energy that requires a medium to travel through. It cannot travel through space. Sound
The highness or lowness of a sound. Pitch
This is the number of sound waves that pass by in a time period (usually per second). It determines the pitch of a sound. Frequency.
The loudness/softness of a sound. Also referred to as the amplitude. Volume.
The larger an object, the _________________ the pitch. (lower, higher) lower
The thinner a guitar string is, the _______________the pitch will be. (lower, higher) higher.
When light waves travel from air into water or a different transparent material, it bends. This is called _________________. refraction
This transparent object, usually made of clear glass or plastic, bends white light and separates it into the colors of the rainbow. a prism
A material that lets nearly all light through it. Transparent
A material that lets some light through, but not all. translucent
A material that blocks light. opaque.
A black object ___________________ all light. (absorbs/reflects) absorbs
A white object ______________________ all light. (reflects/absorbs) reflects
A shadow occurs because an object does this to light. blocks
Another name for a mirror image, or light that bounces back. Reflection.
What does ROYGBIV stand for? the colors of visible light (Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, indigo and violet)
The only part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we can see with our eyes. The visible spectrum.
Mechanical energy that is moving is this type of energy. kinetic.
Mechanical energy that is stored is called this type of energy. potential.
Name the two factors that affect the kinetic energy of an object. the mass and speed of the object
Which has more potential energy, a boy at the top of a small hill or a boy at the top of a mountain? on the mountain (the higher up you are, the greater the potential energy)
Name the three metals that a magnet will attract to. Iron, cobalt and nickel. Remember: steel contains iron, and therefore is attracted to a magnet.
Name the two ways to increase the strength of an electromagnet. 1. Increase the number of wire coils wrapped around the magnet. 2. Increase the power (add batteries or electricity).
What will happen if I place two like poles of a magnet together (N-N or S-S)? They will repel, or push away
How can you get two magnets to ATTRACT to one another? Put opposite poles together (N-S)
Coins are attracted to a magnet. (True/False) False. Coins do not contain iron, silver or nickel (not even nickels!)
Gold and silver are magnetic. (true/false) False.
Where are most electromagnets found? In electric motors. Remember: you cannot have an ELECTROmagnet without ELECTRICITY!
The ability to do work or cause change. energy
The transfer of heat energy through space/air. Radiation (think sun's rays or toasting a marshmallow over a fire)
The transfer of heat energy through touching objects/materials. Conduction (think of a spoon sitting in a cup of hot cocoa; it will get hot also)
The transfer of heat energy through moving currents of hot air or hot water. Convection. (think of hot air rising, cooling and falling, and heating again like an hot water filled radiator)
A material that allows energy to easily pass through it, such as electricity or heat. A conductor.
A material that does not allow energy to pass through it easily (such as rubber or glass) An insulator.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
