Subject Specific

TermDefinition
fantasy a story including elements that are impossible such as talking animals or magical powers
science fiction a type of fiction that uses science and technology (robots, time machines, etc.)
poetry written in verse, uses rhythm and rhyme to help convey the author's meaning, and is meant to create a thought and feeling from the reader
historical fiction stories that take place in a particular time period in the past in which the time and setting are real, but the characters are made up
modern literature a story that has a known author with strong believable characters, can contain wonder and/or magical elements that deals with real life issues
fairy tales a story that may contain wonder, magic, enchantments, fairy godmothers, wicked witches, talking animals, and/or magical objects
realistic fiction a story with made up characters that could happen in real life
mystery a suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story
biography the story of a real person's life that was written by another person
autobiography the story of a real person's life written by that person
