Statins, other HTN/HF drugs

atorvastatin (alone) Lipitor (HMG Co-A reductase inhibitor)- Pregnancy Cat X. Ind: Hyperlipidemias, CHD/CVD prevention. 2nd most potent statin.
atorvastatin (combination with amlodipine) Caduet (HMG Co-A reductase inhibitor, CCB)- Pregnancy Cat X. Ind: Hyperlipidemias, CHD/CVD prevention, HTN, angina.
rosuvastatin Crestor (HMG Co-A reductase inhibitor)- Pregnancy Cat X. Ind: Hyperlipidemia. Most potent statin; only one that must be renally dosed.
niacin Niaspan, Slo-Niacin (both XR, Rx-only. IR, SR are OTC) (Water-soluble B3 vitamin)- Pregnancy Cat A/C. Ind: Dyslipidemia, high TGs(> 500), for incr'ing HDL. Add full-strength ASA for flushing.
ezetimibe (alone) Zetia (2-azetidinone, cholesterol absorption inhibitor)- Pregnancy Cat C. Ind: Hyperlipidemias, sitosterolemia- lowers LDL.
ezetimibe (combination with simvastatin) Vytorin (2-azetidinone, HMG CoA-reductase inhibitor)- Pregnancy Cat X. Ind: Hyperlipidemia.
fenofibrate Tricor (fibric acid)- Pregnancy Category C. Ind: Hypertriglyceridemia (DRUG OF CHOICE FOR HIGH TGs).
omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids Lovaza ("antilipemic agent)- Pregnancy Category C. Ind: Hypertriglyceridemia
furosemide Lasix (loop diuretic)- Pregnancy Category C. Ind: Edema 2ary to HF, hepatic dis, renal dis; acute pulmonary edema; HTN. *BBW* If used to aggressively, excessive diuresis/electrolyte depletion. MONITOR K.
HCTZ Hydrodiuril (thiazide diuretic)- Pregnancy Category B. Ind: HTN, edema 2ary to HF. Caution if gout or sulfa allergy.
spironolactone Aldactone (K-sparing diuretic/selective aldosterone blocker)- Pregnancy Category C/D. Ind: CHF, HTN, hyperaldosteronism, hypokalemia. *BBW* Shown to be tumorigen in chronic toxicity studies in animals- avoid excessive use.
clonidine Catapres, Catapres-TTS (*BBW* Burns if patch kept on in MRIs)(alpha 2 adrenergic agonist)- Pregnancy Category C. Ind: HTN, pain, sedation/ADHD in kids. Can get rebound HTN if stopped abruptly.
