Acne vulgaris commonly known as pimples, acne occurs when the skin pores clog with oil or bacteria
Alopecia partial or complete absence of hair from body areas where it normally grows; baldness
Antiseptics substances that slow or stop microorganism growth of surfaces such as skin
Comedones blackheads; plugs of keratin and sebum in hair follicles blackened at the surface
Dermis a thick layer of connective tissue that contains collagen
Eczema a condition in which patches of skin become rough and inflamed
Emollient a preparation that softens the skin
Epidermis the outermost skin layer composed of the stratum corneum, or horny layer, the keratinocytes (squamous cells), and the basal layer. It also contains melanin, a pigment that contributes to skin and hair color
Eschar a slough produced by a thermal burn, by application of a corrosive, or by gangrene
Exfoliation the peeling off of dead skin
Head louse a louse that infests the scalp and hair of the human head
Hirsutism abnormal growth of hair on a person's face and body
Hypodermis subcutaneous tissue
Keratolytics drugs that cause shedding of the outer layer of the skin
Melanin a dark brown to black pigment found in the hair, skin, and iris of the eye
Metastasize with regard to cancer, to spread from the place of origin as a primary tumor to distant locations in the body
Nodules small swellings or aggregations of cells in the body
Onychomycosis a fungal infection of the fingernails or toenails
Papules small, raised, solid pimples on the skin
Perspiration the process of sweating
Pruritus itching
Pustules small blisters or pimples on the skin containing pus
Sebaceous glands skin glands responsible for the secretion of oil called sebum
Seborrhea excessive discharge of sebum from the sebaceous glands
Sebum an oily/waxy substance that lubricates the skin and retains water to provide moisture
Subcutaneous layer the deepest layer of the skin, consisting of fat cells and collagen; it protects the body and conserves heat
Sweat glands glands in the dermis that are activated by an increase in body temperature to cool the body
Urticaria red welts that arise on the surface of the skin; they are often attributable to an allergic reaction but may have nonallergic causes; also known as hives
Xerosis abnormal dryness of the skin, eyes, or mucous membranes
Acne the occurrence of inflamed or infected sebaceous glands in the skin; in particular, a condition characterized by red pimples on the face
Allergy A condition in which the immune system reacts abnormally to a foreign substance.
Blister a small bubble on the skin filled with serum and caused by friction, burning, or other damage.
Candidiasis A fungal infection typically on the skin or mucous membranes caused by candida.
Cyst An abnormal, usually noncancerous growth filled with liquid or a semisolid substance, sometimes causing pain.
Decubitus Ulcer Damage to an area of the skin caused by constant pressure on the area for a long time
Dermatitis a common condition that has many causes and occurs in many forms. It usually involves itchy, dry skin or a rash on swollen, reddened skin.
Fungus A single-celled or multicellular organism
Mycoses a disease caused by infection with a fungus, such as ringworm or thrush
Petechiae a small red or purple spot caused by bleeding into the skin.
Psoriasis a skin disease marked by red, itchy, scaly patches.
Ringworm a contagious itching skin disease occurring in small circular patches, caused by any of a number of fungi and affecting chiefly the scalp or the feet.
Rosacea a condition in which certain facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flushed appearance.
Scabies a contagious skin disease marked by itching and small raised red spots, caused by the itch mite.
Tinea Capitis a fungal infection of the scalp and hair shafts.
Tinea Manus a fungal infection of the hands
Tinea Pedis a fungal infection affecting the skin between the toes.
tinea unguium A nail fungus causing thickened, brittle, crumbly, or ragged nails.
wheal A raised, itchy (pruritic) area of skin that is sometimes an overt sign of allergy
