Radiation Safety Part 10 - Agencies and Legislation Acts

QuestionAnswer
Who are the ICRP? International Council on Radiological Protection. They are the international agency that collects biological affect data and passes it on to the individual countries like the NCRP. This agency ADVISES, not regulates or power to enforce.
Who are the NCRP? National Council on Radiation Protection. They receive recommendations from the ICRP on lead, doses, etc and takes it into consideration before making their own advisements. They do not enforce - they pass it to the NRC. They write reports ( 116, 102)
Who are the NRC? Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They receive recommendations from the NCRP and make their own regulations and publish them in the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) like 10 CFR 20 and 21 CFR. They enforce. They also oversee nuclear waste and isotopes.
Who are the FDA? Food and Drug Association
Who inspects x-ray equipment? FDA, radiation is a prescription so treated like a drug
If you had a work-related issue with faulty equipment or danger to yourself/others which agency should be contacted? OSHA
What is an Agreement State? When a state is approved by the NRC to oversee their own manufacture of isotopes, nuclear power, etc. They work under the state health department. Fun fact: NC is one.
What legislation was passed by the US congress to protect the public from radiation emitted from electronic items, including x-ray equipment? Earliest regulation. Radiation control for Health and Safety of 1968
What legislation was passed by the US congress that developed Quality Assurance Testing like linearity, collimation regulations, reproducibility, timers, audible warnings, etc? Code of Standards of 1974
